Be Reachable – Please!

Posted by Kelle Sparta on March 16, 2010

I’ve been putting together the Women’s Spirituality Leadership Teleconference and I’ve been recruiting speakers to the event.  Sadly, this is harder than it should be.  You see, I’ve found several women speakers who I would have loved to have on the conference, but I couldn’t reach them.  I’ve got a short date because of scheduling issues and I need to reach people by phone, but the best I can do in some instances is Facebook messages and in others LinkedIn connections.  They haven’t shared enough information online for me to be able to reach them to be able to give them an opportunity to speak.

So here’s my thought for you for the day.  Make sure you’re reachable.  You never know who will be trying to contact you to offer you an opportunity to speak.  Sign out of Facebook and make sure your phone number is visible to people who aren’t your friends.  Sign out of LinkedIn and see what contact information you have listed.  Check your website to make sure that there is a way to reach you.   People will go digging for contact info if they really want you, but there’s a limit to how far.  Don’t make them work too hard for it.

Absolutely right. An idea for those that don’t want to give out their home office or cell numbers. There are several web based phone services that will give you a toll free or local number that rings to voice mail.

Settings let you arrange for an instant text message to tell you there is voicemail. You can also be notified by email with the voicemail attached as an audio file. Messages reviewed by phone or online as well. Very available but private info stays private.

I like http://www.Kall8.com. I’ve also used http://www.MaxEmail.com Both also provide incoming and outgoing fax by email.

    Have a great conference!

    Dear David,

Too true! I’ve used http://www.K9.com in the past as well. But if you don’t get a lot of phone calls, they won’t be the best because they will cancel your number if you don’t get a call or retrieve information for 30 days.

On a website, it really helps if the phone number is in text, not just part of an image. When it’s in an image, I can’t highlight and copy it, which is a convenient thing to do if I want to grab a number and put in a document or calendar, so I can call later.

By the way, I used k9.com too but I think it no longer exists. Google Voice is cool ..but your post is really about the IMPORTANCE of being reachable, not so much about telephone options!

Having an easy-to-remember website address is a good idea too.

    Thanks for today’s conference, Kelle!

I was actually referring to making your email address an image so that it doesn’t get scraped by spammers. The phone number should absolutely be in text so that it is easy to cut and paste (and easy to be picked up by smart phones). Thanks for weighing in! I’m glad you enjoyed the conference. I hope you can make it to the Creating Relationships on the Web class next week!
